Best of 2017: Newborns

Although it didn't seem as though I was busy in 2017, it definitely kept me on my toes.  Of the 43 sessions that I had the pleasure of photographing, 10 of them were newborn babies (that's 4 more compared to 2016!).  Generally, newborns are photographed between 5-12 days new, but I will always make time for newborns!  One of the newborns of 2017 was actually almost 4 weeks old before I met him.  The only difference between him and other fresh newbies is I just needed to make sure he was nice and warm and snuggled up tight.  But even if he was awake, as long as he was happy I just kept clicking my camera.

This little guy was a Christmas present for mom and dad.  I met him on the second day of 2017 and he was such a sweetheart!  He had smiles for the camera almost every 5 minutes!

I was stunned with how flexible and bendy this little one was for his session.  Can you just picture him all curled up inside mom??  Mom even brought a little hat with his name on it for the session.

I just loved the color scheme for this little guys session. Mom showed me his nursery and it was an arrow and teepee theme and these colors matched perfectly.  Being one of the bigger newborns from 2017, he was still very curly when snuggling up with mom.

Dad was able to make it home from overseas just in time to see this baby girl!  Big sister was so good and so gentle while holding her, I wanted to keep both of them in studio all day long!

This little baby girl was extra special to me because I was able to fly down to Texas to meet her and see a long time friend at the same time!  Her bedroom by the window was the perfect spot for her session and she could have slept all day long in there!  We were even able to take her outside in a basket until a beautiful tree!  I'm so thankful for being able to travel and capture these for mom and dad!

A newborn photographer's dream: a baby on the beach!  This mom had a dream of her baby in a canoe by the water and with lots of driftwood and we made that dream come true!  Leesylvania State Park was the perfect setting for this beautiful baby girl!

Pretty in peach and pink, this baby girl loved to cuddle and snuggle.  Mom and dad loved the colors and couldn't believe how well she slept for me considering she had been up all night the day before.  A nice warm spot and wrapped up cozy does it every time.

At almost 10 pounds when I met him, mom loved the neutral colors we picked out for his session. We were even able to capture him and his 3 big sisters together in studio as well.  It was amazing to see how big he grew in only 2 weeks at his reveal session.

Although I loved every single one of the newborns I met in 2017, this baby girl was the most special.  A rainbow baby, meaning mom had suffered miscarriages before finally delivering this miracle. And she slept like a dream for me.  I was able to show mom and dad a few tricks of wrapping to try at night time.

How precious is this little guy??  Meeting mom and dad just a week before he was born for their maternity session, Dad was so amazed at all the little positions I was able to move him into especially this little pose.  And when he smiled for the camera at the same time as dad?  Well, let's just say this is his favorite portrait.

I am so blessed to have met all these little babies in 2017.  I can't wait to meet more in 2018!  As a matter of fact, I have a photography goal of capturing 20 newborn babies for 2018. If you or someone you know is expecting in 2018, it would such an honor to photograph your family's new addition!  Read more about my newborn sessions HERE to see if I'd be a good fit for you and your family!  I'd love to chat with you!

Baby's First Year Plan | Selah C.

Capturing your baby every 3 months!

I first met Selah when she was only 3 days new for her newborn session in March 2016.  Having 4 other children, mom wanted to have an in-home birth but never expected Selah to arrive so quickly. Her doula and the birth photographer never made it to her home in time!  Mom found me was she was visiting one of my dear friends who I had photographed her newborn son as well.

Being able to watch Selah grow every 3 months has been an absolute pleasure!  Babies change so quickly so capturing them every 3 months is really important to me.  But if you look back over the first year and look really closely at the triangle their eyes and nose makes, that stays the same.  It still amazes me every time.

For her newborn session, mom wanted to include a few heirloom pieces.  A beautiful quilt made by her grandmother and a stunning wood bench made by dad's father.  With Selah's gorgeous skin, it was the perfect combination!

Recognize this photo?  At her 3 month session in studio, Selah was with her siblings.  They were able to get Selah to talk and talk and talk.  In the middle of all that talking I was able to capture my absolute favorite portrait (mom's too actually!).

I was so excited to see her again for her 6 month session because mom brought some absolutely gorgeous outfits and the cutest accessories like a little gold bracelet and ring!  Since she looked so good in mint for her newborn and 3 month session, mom and I both thought it fitting if we continued the trend.  And boy did she look amazing!

With her 9 month session being right before Christmas, we thought it only fitting that was have a Christmas theme.  Selah fit perfectly in the outfits I have in studio and loved playing with the pearls!  She was so full of smiles that day!

When the day finally arrived for Selah to have her first birthday celebration, mom had a few requests.  Her birthday cake had to be a large cupcake cake with rosettes on the top matching her peach and mint outfit.  She wanted to include a beautiful ivory dress that her older daughter had worn for her first birthday.  And last but not least, it wouldn't be a fun birthday girl celebration without pearls and tutus.

Mom left the decorations to me and on the day of the session, she arrived with just the birthday girl so it would be all about her!  Between the outfit changes, switching out the backdrops, and the cake, I would have to say that Selah had a wonderful birthday celebration!

Seeing the newborns that I capture grow over their first year is so amazing.  It truly is an honor to be able to watch these babies grow and see their little personalities come alive.  This Baby's First Year Plan was bitter sweet because mom and her family moved to Alaska shortly afterwards.  Hopefully I'll be able to keep in touch with mom to see how this precious baby girl continues to grow into a little toddler.

How does it all work??

Ever wonder what goes into a session?

What to expect before, during and after your photo session

A photo session—whether it’s a maternity, newborn, child's milestone, or a family session—isn’t just about the day of taking pictures. The process can start weeks or even months before, and extends through a post-session process to finalize editing, retouching and product delivery.

I'm all about creating a truly personal, truly immersive experience for my clients—and that starts with you. Here’s a step-by-step look at the process, and the important part you play in getting the best pictures:

Step 1:  Before the consultation

This is definitely one of the most fun parts of the process. Check out Pinterest for inspiration on location, poses, props and general styling. Start thinking about your style and what you’re looking for in your session.

Step 2:  The consultation

Ask questions, look through my portfolio, and figure out what approach you’d like to see in your session and final prints. If you’ve found great inspiration in step #1, bring print outs or websites along! We’ll discuss how you intend to use the images — canvas artwork, framing, an album to hold all your favorite images — and help you refine the message you’re looking to convey within your session. Once you decide I'm the photographer for you, a session fee, which acts as your hold the date, and a signed contract are all you need to go forward.

Step 3:  Finalizing the details

After we determine a location we’ll confirm a date, time and, based on that information, help you finalize apparel, props and poses. I always like to have a backup date as well because you never know when Mother Nature will change her mind on a beautiful sunny day.  Clouds in our forecast?  Even better!  Clouds are nature's own soft boxes so I can put you anywhere and not have to worry about the placement of the sun as well as colors seem to pop so much more on cloudy days!

Step 4:  The Photo session

The day is finally here! Have fun, relax, and let your kids be kids, and you’ll naturally take better photos!

Step 5: Post Processing

This is where I'll color correct any images, maybe crop a little here, check for highlights and shadows, and do a tiny bit of retouching if needed.  Within a week after the session, I'll post a favorite to Facebook and Instagram.

Step 6:  The Reveal & Order Appointment

We’ll schedule a time about 2 weeks post-session for me to come your home and show you all the hand-edited images that you can turn into works of art.  We'll decide which portraits you want to create into wall art, which favorites you might want to turn into Mini Accordion Albums as gifts, and then gather all your favorite portraits and make a one of a kind Heirloom Album.  Your children will love looking at themselves and the rest of the family every single day.  And you'll say to yourself, "Why didn't I do this sooner?"

Step 7: Final delivery

Turnaround time for products is based on the specific product you order.  Once your final prints/products arrive and I make sure they are absolutely perfect, I'll arrange a time to deliver them to you!  No worrying about gathering all the kids in the car again to pick up your products.  If you've ordered wall art, I'll even be happy to help hang them (as long as hubby is ok with me making the holes in the wall)!

So much more goes into a photo session than just the hour long time I spend with the camera in front of my face.  I put my heart into everything I do.  My goal is to make your time so enjoyable, you'll want all your friends to join the fun too!
